The story begins: It was an attractive picture that Martin Jocelyn looked upon through the open doorway of his parlor. His lively daughter Belle had invited half a score of her schoolmates to spend the evening, and a few privileged brothers had been permitted to come also. The young people were naturally selecting those dances which had some of the characteristics of a romp, for they were at an age when motion means enjoyment. The Brothers Grimm The Grimm brothers were early 19th century writers best known for their fairy tales coming from Scandinavian, Icelandic and Germanic origins. By 1807 there was a growing interest in German folk tales. The Grim brothers were academics who invited friends to their home and asked them to relate stories they had heard. They soon published their first collection of tales and from there several more volumes followed. Included in this collection are Hansel and Gretel, Briar Rose, The Fisherman and His Wife, Rapunzel, The Frog Prince, Little Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltshin, Tom Thumb and many more. These stories are a delight to read and will rekindle up many childhood memories as they are reread.

1492: The Year Our World Began by Felipe Fernandez-Armesto traces modernity to its roots in the year 1492. Eugene Sue was a nineteenth-century French novelist regarded, nowadays, as of the second tier -- or lower than that. But we think that there's a brilliance here, and that there's a reason he was most famous for his imaginative and dramatic commentaries on French life. First published pseudonymously in 1764, The Castle of Otranto purported to be a translation of an Italian story of the time of the crusades. In it Walpole attempted, as he declared in the Preface to the second edition, `to blend the two kinds of romance: the ancient and the modern'. He gives us a series of catastrophes, ghostly interventions, revelations of identity, and exciting contests. Crammed with invention, entertainment, terror, and pathos, the novel was an immediate success and Walpole's own favourite among his numerous works. His friend, the poet Thomas Gray, wrote that he and his family, having read Otranto, were now `afraid to go to bed o'nights'. The novel is here reprinted from a text of 1798, the last that Walpole himself prepared for the press.

Parts of this story were a little slow for me to read. Printed in 1903 this fiction story takes place in southern Missouri. Combing a love story with a struggle of either saving a community and a way of life or letting a few people get rich and make a lot of changes people who like to save the great outdoors can relate to this.

The winter had been a hard one: extreme cold deep snow and violent winds. The Wang house had suffered greatly. The roof had fallen in weighed down by heavy snow. Then a hurricane had blown a wall over and Ming-li the son up all night and exposed to a bitter cold wind had caught pneumonia.

This is a reproduction of a book published before 1923.
