  • New Arabian Nights
    Robert Louis Stevenson Robert完结
During his residence in London, the accomplished Prince Florizel of Bohemia gained the affection of all classes by the seduction of his manner and by a well-considered generosity. He was a remarkable man even by what was known of him and that was but a small part of what he actually did. Although of a placid temper in ordinary circumstances, and accustomed to take the world with as much philosophy as any ploughman, the Prince of Bohemia was not without a taste for ways of life more adventurous and eccentric than that to which he was destined by his birth. Now and then, when he fell into a low humor, when there was no laughable play to witness in any of the London theaters, and when the season of the year was unsuitable to those field sports in which he excelled all competitors, he would summon his confidant and Master of the Horse, Colonel Geraldine, and bid him prepare himself against an evening ramble. The Master of the Horse was a young officer of a brave and even temerarious disposition. He greeted the news with delight, and hastened to make ready. Long practice and a varied acquaintance of life had given him a singular facility in disguise he could adapt not only his face and bearing, but his voice and almost his thoughts, to those of any rank, character, or nation and in this way he diverted attention from the Prince, and sometimes gained admission for the pair into strange societies. . . .

  • Gala-days
    Gail Hamilton 15-18岁完结
Once there was a great noise in our house,—a thumping and battering and grating. It was my own self dragging my big trunk down from the garret. I did it myself because I wanted it done. If I had said, "Halicarnassus, will you fetch my trunk down?" he would have asked me what trunk? and what did I want of it? and would not the other one be better? and couldn't I wait till after dinner?—and so the trunk would probably have had a three-days journey from garret to basement.

Frank Hamilton Spearman (1859-1937) was an American author. He was known for his books in the Western fiction genre and especially for his fiction and non-fiction works on the topic of railroads. Although he wrote prolifically about railroads, his actual career was that of a bank president in McCook, Nebraska and did not work for a railroad. Spearman was also a devout Roman Catholic convert and held political views best described as protolibertarian, both of which beliefs are also reflected in his novels. His Western novel Whispering Smith (1906) was made into a movie on three separate occasions, in 1915, 1927 and 1947. His works include: The Nerve of Foley and Other Railroad Stories (1900), Held for Others: Being Stories of Railroad Life (1901), Doctor Bryson (1902), The Daughter of a Magnate (1903), The Strategy of Great Railroads (1904), The Close of the Day (1904), Robert Kimberly (1911), The Mountain Divide (1912), Merrilie Dawes (1913), Nan of Music Mountain (1916), Laramie Holds the Range (1921), The Marriage Verdict (1923), Selwood of Sleepy Cat (1925), Flambeau Jim (1927), Spanish Lover (1930) and Hell's Desert (1933).

  • Danger! and Other Stories
    Arthur Conan Doyle 15-18岁完结
The Title story of this volume was written about eighteen months before the outbreak of the war, and was intended to direct public attention to the great danger which threatened this country. It is a matter of history how fully this warning has been justified and how, even down to the smallest details, the prediction has been fulfilled. The writer must, however, most thankfully admit that what he did not foresee was the energy and ingenuity with which the navy has found means to meet the new conditions. The great silent battle which has been fought beneath the waves has ended in the repulse of an armada far more dangerous than that of Spain.

Il demeure donc dans l'obscurité où il est, pour laisser les jugements plus libres & plus équitables, & il se montrera néanmoins si cette Histoire est aussi agréable au Public que je l'espère.

The night passed away without further event on board the schooner, yet in all the anxiety that might be supposed incident to men so perilously situated. Habits of long-since acquired superstition, too powerful to be easily shaken off, moreover contributed to the dejection of the mariners, among whom there were not wanting those who believed the silent steersman was in reality what their comrade had represented,—an immaterial being, sent from the world of spirits to warn them of some impending evil.

"At sea, when the nets are out and the pipes are lit, then will some ancient hoarder of tales become loquacious, telling his histories to the tune of the creaking of the boats. • Confessions of an English Opium-Eater
    Thomas de Quincey fiction完结
HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics. I here present you, courteous reader, with the record of a remarkable period in my life. The Confessions of an English Opium Eater is both a classic of the English autobiographical genre and a hard-nosed study of the effects of drugs on an artistic mind. A close associate of William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the brilliant but troubled de Quincey recounts both the pleasures and pain of opium addiction in captivating prose. The result is by turns enlightened, nightmarish and witty – a faithful mirror of the drug itself.
